There are some mornings when you really should make the time to stop for coffee.
When Trudie Eyre came to Hollywood as personal assistant for the famous and indulged, she expected to see wealth, glamour and maybe a little crazy. What she did not expect was to be wedged in a doggie door, trying to rescue America’s Sweetheart from a potentially career destroying booty call with Hollywood’s Sexiest Man Alive. Finding the dead body of Hollywood’s favorite bad boy slumped in a shower did not feature in the job description either. Blackmailed by the police for her help, Trudie must navigate the world of the famous and not so famous, while keeping her distance from her gorgeous fake undercover cop boyfriend, before she becomes the next target.

This book is way out of my usual reading zone -- I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, and so mysteries of any sort, whether they be "cozy" mysteries or more typical thrillers, aren't my usual cup of tea. For some reason, however, this book caught my eye, and seeing as it was a Kindle freebie it caught my eye and I figured I should give it a chance. I was a little wary, seeing as it was the first in a series... and many Kindle freebies seem to purposefully end on cliffhangers and/or without resolving any plot points whatsoever, as a cheap trick to get you to purchase the next book in the series. Needless to say, I went into this book with fairly low expectations. The writing of this book needs an editor to look over it, and it's fairly predictable... but surprisingly, I enjoyed it despite its flaws, and a feisty and likable main character went a long way toward that enjoyment.
"Not Famous in Hollywood" follows Trudie Eyre (do NOT call her Gertrude), personal assistant to actress Eleanor Channing, America's Sweetheart in public and an obnoxious, egocentric diva in private. It's Trudie's job to keep Eleanor out of trouble, which includes a valiant attempt at trying to keep her out of the bed of ex-boyfriend Ryan Hendricks, Hollywood's sexiest man alive and resident bad boy. After getting wedged in a doggie door, Trudie finds her client in shock and Ryan dead in the shower... and is instantly dragged into a tangled mess involving affairs, Hollywood power marriages, catfights in spas, a teenager with a flash drive full of incriminating photos, and a grouchy but smoking-hot cop who blackmails Trudie into helping him with the case. Can Trudie uncover just who killed Ryan Hendricks, keep herself from falling for the cop in question, and most importantly stop Eleanor from ruining her own career and/or driving her personal assistant insane?
I'll get the bad out of the way first -- this book isn't terribly well-written. It's readable enough and kept me quickly turning the pages, but has a number of punctuation and grammar errors. I'm not sure if leaving out commas while writing dialogue is an Australian thing or if Leonie Gant just doesn't realize that particular writing rule. Also she has a tendency to splice two sentences together with a comma, which results in some awkward sentences. And a lot of the characters, especially the cop and the actors, tend to be one-dimensional stereotypes.
However, I have a hard time rating this book too low, because it's flat-out funny and enjoyable and the main character and her friends are just too dang likable. Trudie is a no-nonsense but kind-hearted woman, with some wry turns of phrase and some of the funniest lines in the book, and it's hard not to root for her as the book goes along. She provides an insider's look at show business while still keeping her feet firmly planted in reality, and her exasperation with Hollywood's best oozes from every line of dialogue.
The plot is fairly predictable, and one can see from a mile away that Trudie and the cop are going to end up together, but there are a few genuine twists in store for the reader as well. And let's face it, the characters made the journey a fun one, even if the landmarks were pretty familiar.
A decent start to what looks to be an enjoyable mystery series, but the writing could use some work. I'd recommend that Leonie Gant hire an editor to double-check her work and make any necessary corrections, so as to make a more polished work in the future. Her characters deserve decent writing, after all.

Not Famous in Hollywood Not in Hollywood Book 1 edition by Leonie Gant Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I really loved this book. The characters were so much fun. The authors description of each person made it so easy to see who they were. There was mystery, humor and just a touch of romance. I really enjoyed this story and didn't guess who the "bad guy" was. I recommend reading this book. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
This was free, so I expected a fluffy book, but it was very well written. The spelling and grammar was nicely edited, very rare for a free book. I enjoyed the story. The mystery was solvable, but still kept me guessing. I certainly recommend this new series.
Well, this was a surprise. Not Famous in Hollywood by Leonie Gant has been free for a while now and I picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Last night, before heading to bed I decided I needed an easy, cute book and I was hoping this was it. Let’s just say that I didn’t go to bed until hours after my bedtime.
I was immediately drawn into these characters. Trudie is a no-nonsense woman, who is in the business of “PR disaster prevention”. Seriously, laugh out loud funny and sweet. Trudie has a way of ending up in situations that are over the top and sometimes not believable. Although, I don’t live in L.A. and they could totally be believable there. 😉 I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and only took a couple hours to devour. If you like good friends, obnoxious starlets, and murder all mixed with fun characters and a good story definitely don’t miss this one!
The story was great. Trudie was believable and fun to get to know. I loved hearing about her job and life. I enjoyed all of the characters. Thank you for not using crude languages or sexual content. After I finished reading it I felt good for having read it. I will be happy to recommend it to my friends.
This is a cute, well written mystery. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. Trudie Eyre is a PA (Personal Assistant) for difficult Hollywood stars. On what should have been her first day off from work in four months, she instead finds herself wedged up to her hips in a doggie door trying to save her current boss from The Walk of Shame. And things just get worse when she has to fake date an LAPD detective to help find out who murdered the booty call. Trudie is the nice girl who always tries to do the right thing, and doesn't want to be deported or jailed.
This book surprised me again and again. Not because of the plot, which was easy and not really all that important to the enjoyment of the book, but because the main character, Trudie, holds her own in situation after situation, despite being patient, longsuffering and empathetic. She doesn't let the abuse she receives, or a past bitter blow, stop her from having a positive attitude about people. Good for her, and good for the author. We need more people like this in our lives.
Another thing that surprised and impressed me was the way she held her own with Detective Hottie. I thought, like most of the poor characters that authors like to put in this situation, that she would be a pushover and lose all her spunk (and my respect). Instead, even though she forgives him for a nasty trick he pulls on her, she remains true to herself and he comes around to realizing there's something special about Trudie Eyre. When he apologizes, I believe it. I also liked that the romance angle was subtle and didn't take over the mystery--so many cozies have a problem that way. The author gave us just enough to want more.
The only negative I could find in this smart and funny (with a heart) book, was that there were a lot of missing commas, particularly in the dialogue. But it didn't detract from the story in the least. The sign of a good writer. I'm looking forward to her next book because, yes, finding a writer like her is not easy these days and I want to read everything she's written.
